Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat is a computer game from the beat-'em-up genre, which was designed by programmers and designers Ed Boon John Tobias and developed by the American software company, Midway, and first appeared in arcades in 1992. Mortal Kombat was developed as a response to the popular Capcom game Street Fighter II. It contains some extremely brutal violence, some of which led to the founding of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), and for indexing. It appeared several successors, as well as movies, cartoons, TV series and merchandising products.

In 1991 the Williams arcade machines manufacturers a fighting game decided in competition with the then very successful Street Fighter II to bring to the market. Ed Boon and John Tobias led the project team during the ten months of development.
To stand out from the multitude of other Street Fighter II imitations decide themselves Boon and Tobias at the outset for an unusual at the time game graphics: instead of sprites, with the fighters and their movements will be shown in play, draw by hand leave, digitized pictures were taken in the game. At the same time the size of the characters has been maximized, the playability was just ensured. The technology for digitizing at Williams was already in place and before the games NARC (1988) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (first-person light gun shooter, 1991) was used.
From the model of the popular Street Fighter II Special attacks that are triggered by certain undocumented shortcuts and find out it was taken over. In addition, the Fatalities were mentioned, secret moves from the following observation: In many other fighting games were the fighters for a short while drowsy when they had suffered a "direct hit". For a moment they were then a further blow to the enemy defenseless, before they could again intervene actively. Mortal Kombat In this mechanism has been moved to the end the fight. At the end of the last round when the winners were identified, came to call him the "Finish him!". If he knew the combination for the Fatality, he could kill his already beaten opponent. Ed Boon says the emergence of Fatalities that came out of the development team's proposal "to do something cruel." As a result, each fighter has a different designed Fatality: Kano pulls his opponent around the heart from the chest and Sub-Zero rips off his head along with the spine. That is precisely the Fatalities would make the game so popular, was unaware of the developers. It was assumed that the necessary combinations would be too complicated and would be uncovered only by a few players. In addition to the kämpferbezogenen Pit Fatalities Fatalities also were installed in the game: some arenas offer the option properties of the environment for the killing of the defeated enemy to use.
There were also Geheimcharaktere and Easter Eggs.
The home implementation of Mortal Kombat was released in 1993 with an unusually elaborate video game marketing strategy in which we sent in the Mortal Monday campaign an avalanche of television ads. All console versions came on the same day in the shops.
First reactions
The Fatalities ensured as well as for those days very realistically depicted characters for controversial discussions. For a player who knew the secret combinations, this meant prestige in public arcades. The general discussion of Mortal Kombat was for sales of the vending machine game very favorable: the immediate onset of Mortal Kombat success surpassed even the very popular Street Fighter II
Violence discussion
The implementation for home consoles in the U.S. led to a wave of outrage among parents and politicians, because video games had previously been associated mostly with almost violent games such as Super Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog. This led eventually to the fact that the conservative Senator Joe Lieberman in a speech to the congress called to let games like Mortal Kombat and Night Trap ban seen as controversial by the Constitution.
Evolution
With Mortal Kombat 4, the digitized 2D actors were replaced by polygonal figures, bringing the series to enter into the 3D era began. Appeared in 2002 with "Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance" is the first Mortal Kombat, which was kept completely in 3D and also with a completely new fighting engine, presented based on the following components.
Co-Creator John Tobias left Midway Games 1998 after the development of Mortal Kombat 4 and during the development of spin-offs "Special Forces". His partner, Ed Boon continues to work as project manager and programmer in the series.
